In the frame of the 140th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Korea and Germany happening in 2023, Seoul-based art center The Reference invites the artist Laure Catugier for a 3 weeks solo show. In collaboration with the artist book platform einBuch.haus in Berlin, The Reference is willing to present Catugier's exhibition entitled after her recent first monograph: Architecture is Frozen Music, gathering her artistic work of the last ten years. Presented in the form of an e-book (digital) accompanied by a limited edition artist's book-object, this editorial project is a collaboration with einBuch.haus and Editions Naima (Paris/Berlin).

Catugier explores the diversity of post-war global architecture inspired by the Bauhaus movement. Her recent research focuses on the social aspect of modernism, and in particular on collective housing and its progressive norms, spaces, forms and uses. With the omnipresent use of concrete, how did this architecture contribute to a standardization of forms and uses, and how, in disparate cultural and climatic contexts, can populations appropriate these uniform spaces?

In the main exhibition space, there will be suspended several double-sided panels of photographs from the series Architecture is Frozen Music, printed on blue-back paper and mounted on PVC pipes. And also, the long-term project Architecture is Frozen Music, a series of seven stop-motion videos made during her various artistic residencies all over the word. Each video is constructed from photographs taken in their respective locations, questioning the architectural forms of modernism. They are accompanied by a soundtrack, the result of a collaboration with local sound artists and special edition UNIT #2 produced for this exhibition.

더레퍼런스와 베를린의 아티스트북 갤러리 아인부흐하우스(einBuch.haus)는 한독 수교 140주년을 맞이하여 로레 카투지에(Laure Catugier) 개인전 《Architecture is Frozen Music》을 공동 주최한다. 한국에서 처음으로 선보이는 이번 로레 카투지에의 개인전에서는 모더니즘 건축의 기하학적 언어를 담아낸 영상 및 사진 설치물과 지난 10년 간의 작업을 집대성한 모노그래프 e-book, 북 오브제 『Architecture is Frozen Music』을 함께 선보일 예정이다.

로레 카투지에는 바우하우스 운동에서 영감을 받아 전후 글로벌 건축의 다양성과 모더니즘 건축의 기능성을 탐구한다. 보편적인 콘크리트의 사용과 더불어 건축물이 양식과 용도의 표준화에 기여했는지, 서로 다른 문화적/기후적 맥락에서 인류가 어떻게 획일적 공간을 적절히 활용할 수 있었는지 의문을 제기하며, 최근에는 모더니즘의 사회적 측면, 특히 공동 주택과 그 진보적 규범, 공간, 형태 및 용도에 주목하여 연구를 진행하고 있다.
전시에서는 거리 광고 포스터에 주로 사용되는 블루백 페이퍼에 출력한 사진 연작을 건축 소재의 기본 요소인 PVC 파이프에 설치한 양면 패널 작업과 세계 각지의 레지던시에서 머물며 진행한 장기 프로젝트를 7개의 스톱 모션 비디오 연작으로 선보인다. 모더니즘 건축 양식에 대한 질문을 던지는 각 영상은 작가가 방문한 각 도시에서 촬영한 사진으로 구성되며, 현지 사운드 아티스트와 협력하여 제작한 사운드 트랙과 더레퍼런스에서의 전시를 위해 특별히 제작된 스페셜 에디션 (2023)도 함께 감상할 수 있다.

Laure Catugier
Laure Catugier lives and works in Berlin. She graduated from the École d’Architecture de Toulouse and the École des Beaux-Arts de Toulouse. As an artist with a background in architecture, Catugier's work conveys the geometric language of modernism. Through diverse media such as photography, video or performance, she questions the perception and representation of spatiality. She examines the functionality of modernist architecture and urban spaces and researchs on the global standardisation of construction.

Since 2015, she has obtained several residency grants in Germany, Austria, Japan, Iran, Czech Republic, Russia, Egypt, Bolivia and Taiwan. She is the winner of the International Celeste Prize, as well as scholarships from the Goldrausch Künstlerinnenprojekt Berlin, the Pilecki Institute Warsaw and the Stiftung Kunstfonds Bonn. In 2021, she was the winner of a public art installation in a future subway station in Toulouse.

로레 카투지에
베를린에서 거주하며 작업하는 로레 카투지에는 툴루즈 건축학교와 예술학교를 졸업했다. 건축을 전공한 작가로서 카투지에의 작품은 모더니즘의 기하학적 언어를 전달한다. 사진, 비디오, 퍼포먼스 등 다양한 매체를 통해 공간성에 대한 인식과 표현에 의문을 제기하며, 모더니즘 건축과 도시 공간의 기능성을 조명하고 건축의 글로벌 표준화에 대해 연구한다. 2015년부터 독일, 오스트리아, 일본, 이란, 체코, 러시아, 이집트, 볼리비아, 대만에서 레지던시 지원을 비롯하여, 베를린 골드라우쉬 여성 예술가 프로젝트, 바르샤바 필리케 인스티튜트, 독일 예술 기금재단에서 지원 작가로 선정되었으며, 국제 셀레스트상을 수상했다. 2021년에는 툴루즈의 미래 지하철역에 설치될 공공 예술 작품의 수상자로 선정되었다.
