Unfolding Time: Zhenxianbao (针线包) Artist Book Workshop

(EN) In this two-day workshop, participants will weave together writing, traditional bookmaking, hidden elements and sound to create their own artist book in the form of a multisensory time capsule.

During the first session, Juli Cordray will lead a guided writing exercise. Together, we will pause and consider meaningful moments, feelings, and discoveries – reflecting on the year as it draws to a close. Then, we’ll explore how to present our writings in the form of a dynamic, tactile object that might not be read in a linear way.

On day two, Joey Chin will introduce participants to zhenxianbao (针线包), a traditional Chinese folk art form of a folder used to store sewing needles and thread. Participants will use an assortment of papers and materials to create their own as a book with different sections, folds, layers and hidden pockets. The book will hold spaces to tuck away notes, small keepsakes and personal fragments, along with the written foundation created during the first part of the workshop.

The workshop will culminate in a mini showcase and public programme, where participants can display their completed artist’s books. The showcase will be accompanied by a short introduction and informal sharing session by the participants and the instructors Joey Chin and Juli Cordray.

(DE)

Instructor

Joey Chin is an artist and writer. Her work is at the intersections of text, narrative and visual art, staged through language, poetry, acts and modes of reading, and various disruptions. Her key focus is in the development of personal communications between the self, markings of territoriality, and the inner conversations between the two.

Juli Cordray works between art writing, written art, publishing and bookmaking. Within the scope of her publishing project, textur, her practice considers art through text and text as art medium. She also crochets texts into textile books: extending the tactility of reading and writing as experiences of the body.
