Substance
For Substance, Japanese photographer Ikuhisa Sawada pointed his camera at details and patterns found in train stations, on staircases, walls or pillars and photographed them to look like exhibited pieces of modern art.
As the artist takes more photographs, the images become increasingly abstract and emotionally detached. The composition of artificial subjects becomes layered, resulting in a reduction of their emotional impact. By presenting space in an inorganic manner, the artist aims to create distance between the viewer and emotional responses, instead highlighting the essence of the environment. This collection is structured around Sawada's photographs and works displayed in the same space, offering a unique perspective on the environment. As the pages are turned, the photographs in the book evoke a sense of transition between the artist's perspective and that of the viewer. The overlapping layers and composition of the images shift, embodying Sawada's unwavering focus on his subject matter
