SMALL TALKS VOL. 3: Finance (BERLIN EDITION)

Co-produced by Small Editions and einBuch.Kollektiv. This season, we’re focusing solely on the topic of: FINANCES! 🧀🧀🧀

No one goes into independent publishing for the money, so they say. Margins run low, expenses run high. Printing and paper costs go up every year, and what's that: shipping prices just doubled?? Every independent publisher is scrappy, but scrappy in their own way.

For this talk, we’ve invited Youvalle Levy of Replika Publishing (Berlin/Valencia) to present alongside us. Together, we’ll give an honest look into what it actually costs to run an independent publishing practice — how we fund projects, how we share sales amongst artists and collaborators, and if, at the end of the day, any of it adds up to a sustainable creative practice. You’ll see two publishing houses, two models, and two different ways of making it work.

Early bird tickets are now on sale until June 12. Seats are limited!!

° Small Talks is an in-person event series about books: designing books, making books, publishing books, selling books, distributing books, collecting books. Each Small Talk explores one theme in detail // Small Talks invites a myriad of book-ish folks to speak about projects, practice, and contemporary issues in book-making // Small Talks are short, sweet, cozy, and informal

Everyone is welcome.

English and no-refund for this event.

Early bird ticket: 10 Euro after June 12, raises to 15 Euro

REPLIKA
Replika Publishing is an independent, artist-run platform for experimental publishing. Founded in Berlin in 2015, and operating between Berlin and Valencia since 2020. We collaborate closely with artists to produce works in small editions which challenge the boundaries of the book as form. Replika supports artists and work that might not otherwise be published and offers space for under-recognised voices and projects rooted in conceptual depth, material inquiry, and artistic dialogue. Our approach is collaborative, flexible, and considered, with a focus on thoughtful production and a commitment to artistic value

Youvalle Levy (b. 1991) is an artist, photographer, and the co-founder of Replika Publishing. After studying photography at BTK Berlin and architecture at Universität der Künste, Youvalle developed an interest in urbanism, exploring the beauty found in the ignored aspects of everyday life. Her diverse body of work spans photobooks, installations, printmaking, video, and ceramics. In 2015, Youvalle co-founded Replika Publishing in Berlin with Freya Copeland. Since 2021, Youvalle has been an integral part of Bildband Berlin. In addition to her role as a picture editor at a Berlin newspaper and fine art photographer, Youvalle leads the Bildband Zine Making Workshop.
SMALL EDITIONS
Small Editions is an artist book publishing project based in Brooklyn, NY. We believe in the book as a form of art, rather than a vehicle for art. We’ve lectured and taught workshops at Yale School of Art and Princeton University, among others. Our publications have been collected by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, the Rijksmuseum, New York Public Library, Harvard University, and Walker Art Center, among others. These collections are free and open to all.

Isobel Chiang is a graphic designer from Canada. She’s one half of Small Editions. Hannah Pierce is a publisher, strategist, and educator, and the other half of Small Editions. In 2026, they co-founded Hiccup, a graphic design studio and print consultancy.
