Material Layers at einBuch.haus brings together Paul Tuttas's work between printing and bookmaking, centred on two pieces: Struktur and Blick aufs Meer.
The artist's book Struktur results from layering, overlaying, and printing with different materials (such as bubble wrap, cotton cloth, a linoleum sheet, a cabbage leaf) that usually resist print. By printing them onto different papers, combining materials into new compositions across the five chapters, he turns the reader's attention toward the printing process itself. Struktur is where this process ends up and is carried into an object a reader can hold and leaf through. For Tuttas, the page is not where a finished idea is shown, but where it is still being tested. The grey podiums at the centre of the exhibition space open this process up, showing the materials and test prints behind Struktur's five chapters.
Blick aufs Meer carries the same instinct further: three long printed strips, gathering the sea's moods from Skye, the Portuguese and the Baltic coast, folded into a single continuous surface that unfolds across the main wall of the exhibition space.
What sets these books apart is that the entire production runs through one person. Tuttas writes, prints, and binds Struktur and Blicks aufs Meer himself, so that every step from the first material test to the final fold carries his own decision.
Beyond these two works, einBuch.haus also presents a selection of books Tuttas has made in dialogue with other artists: landscape:escapeland and Grenzen/Hranice. For this exhibition, Tuttas has produced a new series of fanfolds, carrying Struktur's material experiments into new territory.
Artist
Paul Tuttas
Born in 1996 in Ludwigslust, Germany, Paul Tuttas lives and works in Prague, Czech Republic. He completed a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts in Regensburg and graduated with a Master’s in Illustration and Graphics from the Academy of Arts, Architecture, and Design (UMPRUM) in Prague in 2024.
His artistic focus lies in printmaking, where he explores both traditional techniques such as woodcut and linocut, as well as experimental methods like monotype and material printing. Nature is at the heart of his work—through his images, he discovers and interprets landscapes, capturing their textures, rhythms, and moods. His oeuvre includes prints, artist’s books, and commissioned projects in illustration and graphic design. Beyond his artistic practice, he shares his expertise through workshops on various printing techniques and bookbinding methods.
The medium of the book plays a central role in his work. In Struktur (2023), he explores the significance of material selection in printmaking. Through artistic dialogues, collaborative publications such as Grenzen/Hranice (2023) with Johannes Steubl and landscape:escapeland (2024) with Isidora Stojanović have emerged. Since 2023, he has regularly published the Analogue Newsletter, offering insights into his artistic practice.
His work has been recognized with several awards, including the Simeona-Hošková Prize in Prague (2024), The Most Beautiful Czech Books of the Year (2025), and the kunstpreis in Regensburg (2022). Paul Tuttas exhibits in solo and group exhibitions in Germany and the Czech Republic with his works being represented in public collections.
