The artworks realised by Lucian Barbu, Laure Catugier, Lena Ciobanu, Georgiana Cojocaru, Janine Jop, Irina Motroc, Ruxandra Nițescu, and Lisa Marie Schmitt present the outcome of a two-week residency held in Șona, Brașov County Romania, where artists explored the interaction between two artistic mediums of expression: sound and book.
Through a series of three workshops: introductory, sound art, and self-publishing, the artists developed works that delve into the multifaceted concept of space, moving beyond the traditional space-place dichotomy, highlighting cultural, socio-political, and environmental dimensions of Șona and its soundscape.
The books and sounds play with local stories, speculative narratives, architectures of space, relationships with more-than-human beings, memory of place, “lost” narratives, and imaginative systems of fiction.

Sounds like a Book

Sounds like a Book is a residency program, hosted at Casa Albastră in Șona, Brașov County, Romania. As the chosen name suggests, SLB focuses on the visual transmission, conversion, and representation of the sound. Centered around sound art and self-publishing workshops, the program fosters artistic research, experimentation, and the cross-pollination of creative practices with tools, methods, and insights from other disciplines.

Sound Performance (S)pace ≠ Space by Isak Han: 19 hr

”(S)pace ≠ Space” is a multichannel spatial sound performance that explores the blurred boundary between physical space and perceptual space. Developed from 8 sound pieces created during the "Sounds Like a Book" residency, this performance transforms sound into spatial gesture moving through and around the audience in immersive layers. Rather than occupying space, sound becomes space: shifting, resonating, and reconfiguring our sense of presence.
Each sonic layer functions like a page from a book opening, folding, and rewriting the environment in real time.

Isak Han

Isak Han is a sound artist, experimental musician, and digital instrument inventor who explores the boundaries of sound experimentation.
He develops compositional systems with complex behaviors that produce unpredictable results. Isak primarily composes his music using intelligent and autonomous music machines. These range from acoustic sound makers to electroacoustic, analog electronic, and fully digital devices, many of which he builds or codes himself.
