In architecture, drawing a line is equivalent to representing a wall in plan, i.e. from above. This element divides the space and imposes a duality. By adding other lines to this simple line, artist Laure Catugier creates forms that take up the codes of architectural representation, such as profile view, plan view, perspective and so on. This practice of drawing alludes to her studies at the Toulouse School of Architecture in the early 2000s, a time when hand-drawing was still an indispensable form of expression in the profession, now virtually replaced by digital drawing.
The Split project began in 2021 with a video and continued as a book-object in 2025, in which the construction thread (binding) is also the element used for drawing. The book is hand-drawn by the artist. Following the "Open Form" theory of Polish modernist architect Oskar Hansen, it has neither beginning nor end.
