Article/ Kunstdialog von Zoller & Porter by Hans Braumüller

"Works on Paper" at einBuch.haus presents the sprawling mail art project of Zoller & Porter (artists Rahel Zoller and Louis Porter) as an exhibition, temporary archive and public study space.

The project, consisting of artist books, unique artworks, letters, creative experiments and found objects examines our social and cultural relationship to paper, its function as a medium for the transference of information, touch and aura. Produced between 2020-21 the project incorporates a bewildering away of material including: price tags, toilet paper, jigsaw puzzles, envelopes, newspaper, scratch cards, books, calling cards, paper bags, a will, napkins, raffle tickets, calendars, sandpaper, receipts, letters, a parking fine, carbon paper, postcards, hotel notepaper, photographs, edible rice paper, certificates, a clock face, puzzles, blotting paper, glassine, photocopies, security paper, a census, cardboard, graph paper, banknotes, a fortune teller’s calling card and an oversized novelty cheque.

For their exhibition at einBuch.haus, Zoller & Porter will present a selection of material from the project on the walls of the gallery and the shelves of a specially built art cabinet. The remainder of the project will be housed in archival boxes and visitors will be invited to consult items not on display by request. The display furniture draws inspiration from both the renaissance depictions of St. Jerome in his study and the cosmology of the Wunderkammer and the Kunstkammer as principals of organising information.

By appropriating early modern display and organisation strategies, the artists aim to develop a form of encounter that goes beyond the often-bureaucratic ways of presenting archival works in a contemporary arts space. Integral to this display is the invitation to visitors to take the time to sit within the "study room" and engage in a self-guided tour of the works and find their own interpretations.

Works on Paper
Zoller & Porter, 2023

For one year—beginning in April 2020—artists Rahel Zoller and Louis Porter undertook a mail art project entitled, Works on Paper. The rules of this project were never precisely established, although each of the works examines in some way society’s relationship with paper. Amongst a variety of other items the project contains price tags, toilet paper, jigsaw puzzles, envelopes, newspaper, scratch cards, books, calling cards, paper bags, a will, napkins, raffle tickets, calendars, sandpaper, receipts, letters, a parking fine, carbon paper, postcards, hotel notepaper, photographs, edible rice paper, certificates, a clock face, puzzles, blotting paper, glassine, photocopies, security paper, a census, cardboard, graph paper, banknotes, a fortune teller’s calling card and an oversized novelty cheque.

This limited-edition artists’ box containing 19 facsimiles and re-workings of several items in the project as well as a catalogue and a poster was produced in an edition of 50 copies.
